A sacred city whose calendar peaks with Poson, and a working district town year-round.
Anuradhapura's calendar is set by the sacred city at its centre. The Sri Maha Bodhi, Ruwanwelisaya and the dagobas around them draw pilgrims all year, and every poya brings observances, almsgivings and evening chanting that anyone may attend. The biggest date by far is Poson in June, marking the arrival of Buddhism on the island: Anuradhapura and nearby Mihintale fill with pilgrims dressed in white, and dansal — roadside stalls handing out free food and drink — line the approaches for days. Almost none of it is ticketed. It is walked into rather than booked.
Underneath that, the town works like any district capital. School and club cricket fill the grounds in season, the halls and school auditoriums take drama, prize-givings and music nights, and April brings Avurudu games and agricultural fairs. Accommodation, not tickets, is the constraint here — around Poson and the long weekends the town books out weeks in advance, and because the dates follow the lunar calendar they move every year. Confirm the year's date before planning a trip around it.
