A surprising amount of what happens in Sri Lanka costs nothing to walk into. Gallery openings and photography exhibitions, temple and church feasts, weekend craft markets, dansal in May, public lectures and panel discussions, school and club sports fixtures, and the free stages that run alongside bigger festivals. Colombo carries the densest calendar, but the pattern holds island-wide — the smaller the town, the more likely an event is simply open to whoever turns up.
Free entry rarely means unstructured. Exhibitions keep gallery hours, fairs run to a schedule, and popular talks still fill their seats, so it is worth checking the listing before you set out. Where an event is free but asks you to register, the organiser's contact is on the page. Bring cash for the stalls either way — card machines remain the exception at anything held on a temple ground, a school field or a beachfront.
