An inland Kalutara-district town with a campus, big schools and a full feast calendar.
Horana is an inland town of the Kalutara district, on the road between the coast and the rubber country, and its calendar is a local one. The university campus here leans towards mass media and the performing arts, which shows up in its public screenings, drama evenings and student productions through the academic year. The town's large schools carry much of the rest — cricket and rugby fixtures at the grounds, prize-givings, concerts and plays in the auditoriums, and the fairs that go with them.
The temple and church calendar fills the remaining weekends: peraheras, feast days, Vesak lantern displays and dansal in May, and Avurudu games through April. The industrial estates around the town add company sports meets and family days, usually private but occasionally open. Most events here are free or charge a small amount at the gate, and organisers are schools, temples and clubs rather than promoters — so where a ticket exists it is normally sold locally or over a phone number rather than online.
