Things to do in Kalutara

Almost everyone driving south passes the Kalutara Bodhiya and its white chaitya beside the bridge, and the temple is the anchor of the town's calendar. Poya days bring observances and almsgivings; Vesak in May is the big one, when the bodhiya, the bridge approaches and the surrounding streets fill with lanterns, pandals and dansal handing out free food to anyone who stops. It is a walking festival rather than a ticketed one, and it runs for several nights.

The rest of the year is a district town's calendar: school and club cricket at the grounds, the big-match weekends in February and March, prize-givings and drama in the halls, church feasts along the coast, and Avurudu fairs in April. The beach and the Kalu Ganga mouth add open-air concerts, water sports events and hotel functions, busiest between December and April when the west coast is dry. Most of it is free or a small charge at the gate; the hotel events sell through the property directly.
