Things to do in Kegalle

Kegalle sits on the old Colombo–Kandy road, in the belt of rubber and spice country between the lowlands and the hills, and its events are almost entirely local. The schools carry the most visible part: cricket through the season, the town's own big-match weekend, rugby fixtures, prize-givings and school productions in the halls. Temples and churches fill out the calendar with peraheras, feast days, Vesak displays and dansal, and the weekly fair brings its own crowd into the town centre.

Being on the main road means a share of passing traffic — touring musicians and drama companies stop here between Colombo and Kandy, and the district's hotels take conferences and residential training. Pinnawala and the elephant orphanage are a short drive away and pull most of the visitor attention in the district. Entry to almost everything listed here is free or a small amount at the gate, and where tickets exist they are usually sold locally rather than online.
