A coastal town where the esplanade, the schools and the beach carry the calendar.
Panadura is the first proper town south of the Colombo sprawl, and it has more life of its own than that position suggests. The esplanade ground hosts first-class and club cricket through the season, and the town's schools run one of the more fiercely followed big matches outside the capital, with the flags, parades and papare bands that go with it. The beach and the river mouth add open-air concerts, fairs and new-year events, busiest through the dry stretch from December to April.
The rest is the familiar mix of a Western Province town: temple peraheras and Vesak pandals, church feasts along the coast, Avurudu games in April, and school and club prize-givings in the halls. Panadura also has a long history of public preaching and debate that still shows up as well-attended religious lectures and discussion evenings. Most events are free or charge at the gate, and the coast road and railway make it an easy trip from Colombo — though both are slow at rush hour.
