Things to do in Pottuvil

Pottuvil is the town Arugam Bay is attached to, and the distinction matters. The bay, a few minutes down the road, is where the surf season and the parties happen between roughly May and September. Pottuvil is where the buses, the market, the schools and the administration are, and its own calendar runs on a different clock — the mosques set much of it, so Ramadan and the Eid festivals reshape the town's evenings, while the Hindu and Buddhist communities add their own temple observances, including at the old shrine beside the beach.

Through the surf season the two calendars overlap: the town takes the overflow of accommodation, transport and food, and the visitor-facing events over at the bay pull staff and traders in from here. Out of season Pottuvil returns to being a working east-coast town, and most of what is listed becomes community events, school sport and fairs rather than anything ticketed. Almost none of it charges more than a small amount at the gate.
