Things to do in Ratmalana

Ratmalana is a working suburb on the Galle Road south of Dehiwala — an airfield, industrial estates, schools and dense housing rather than anywhere anyone travels to for a night out. Its events reflect that. The bulk of what gets listed is a function or banquet hall booking: weddings and receptions through the season, dinner-dances, company parties, award nights and prize-givings. Schools and churches supply the rest, with fairs, feast days, carol services in December and matches at the grounds through the cricket season.

That is a description of the place rather than a complaint about it — the beach hotels of Mount Lavinia are a few minutes north and Colombo proper twenty minutes further, so anything larger tends to be listed under those instead. What happens here is genuinely local, mostly free or a small charge at the gate, and organised by a school, a parish or a hall rather than a promoter. The coast road and the railway both serve it well, though the road is slow from mid-afternoon onwards.
