A sheltered bay minutes from Galle Fort, at its busiest from December to April.
Unawatuna's season runs with the rest of the south-west coast: roughly December to April, when the bay is calm, the beachfront restaurants put tables on the sand and the bars along the strip run live music, DJ sets and beach parties most evenings. It peaks hard over the festive stretch and again around the April holidays. Because Galle Fort is only ten minutes away the two calendars feed each other — people staying here go into the fort for the arts and literary events, and the fort's crowd comes out to the beach afterwards.
Off season the strip thins out considerably and a good share of the venues close, so an event advertised for the middle of the year is worth confirming before travelling for it. Entry to most nights is at the door or free; the larger parties, particularly around New Year, sell passes ahead through the venue's own link or WhatsApp. The village behind the beach keeps its own temple calendar, and the pagoda on the headland is a quiet walk on any day of the year.
