Punchi Apata Dan Therei
Somalatha Subasinghe's classic Sinhala children's play returns to the Namel Malini Punchi Theatre for two shows on 8 August, at 3.30pm and 6.45pm. Reserved seats from LKR 1,000.
Punchi Apata Dan Therei ("Now We Know") is the children's play that launched Somalatha Subasinghe's career in 1971 and has stayed in the Sri Lankan repertoire ever since. Built from folk-tale material, it follows a generous rooster and four mischievous boys, and is written to introduce young audiences to song, movement and traditional performance forms.
It is prescribed in the national curriculum for Grade 6 drama and Grade 9 Sinhala literature, so matinees tend to fill with school parties; the production has also travelled to children's theatre festivals in France, South Korea, India, Australia and the Netherlands.
