Bakmaha Akunu — බක්මහ අකුණු
Dayananda Gunawardena's Sinhala take on The Marriage of Figaro, the 1963 comedy that introduced the revolving stage to Sri Lankan theatre, returns to Kolamba Kamatha at the BMICH for two Sunday performances.
Bakmaha Akunu is Dayananda Gunawardena's Sinhala reworking of Beaumarchais' The Marriage of Figaro, and one of the most consequential productions in the country's theatre history — its 1963 premiere put a revolving stage in front of Sri Lankan audiences for the first time. The comedy turns on masters and servants, courtship, jealousy and conspiracy, using farce to needle the way power and privilege actually behave once the doors are closed. Unius Entertainment stages it at the open-air Kolamba Kamatha theatre inside the BMICH, with a matinee and an evening show on the same Sunday.
