Madhura Jawanika — Musical Stage Drama
Dayananda Gunawardena's landmark Sinhala musical returns to the Kamatha open-air theatre at the BMICH for two shows in one day, at 3.30 pm and 6.30 pm. Tickets from LKR 1,000.
Madhura Jawanika is one of the landmark musicals of the Sinhala stage, created by playwright Dayananda Gunawardena, and Unius Entertainment brings it back to the Kamatha arts space at the BMICH for two performances on the same day.
The production sweeps across a very long arc of Sri Lankan story and history — opening in the mythic war between Rama and Ravana, moving through the arrival and impact of Western colonial rule, and landing in the pressures of contemporary life. It carries all of that through song, dance and ensemble staging rather than straight dialogue, which is what has kept it in the repertoire for decades. The full cast and music credits had not been announced when this listing was prepared.
