Somalatha Subasinghe Theatre Festival 2026
Two days of classic children's and youth theatre at Elphinstone Theatre: Walas Pawla on 20 August and Vikurthi on 21 August, each staged twice daily at 3.30 pm and 6.45 pm by the Somalatha Subasinghe Play House.
The Somalatha Subasinghe Play House takes over Elphinstone Theatre for two days to revive the repertoire built by Somalatha Subasinghe, the pioneer of children's and youth theatre in Sri Lanka. Two of her best-known works anchor the programme. Walas Pawla is her warm Sinhala retelling of Goldilocks and the Three Bears, a company staple that has been playing to school and family audiences for years. Vikurthi is the sharper counterpart, a satirical look at young people squeezed between their parents' ambitions and their own abilities and choices.
Each play is staged twice on its day, so families can choose an afternoon or an early-evening sitting.
